ACCA question paper examiner,s verbs definition



Understanding examiner,s verbs used in ACCA exam question papers is very important. If this is not the case it means you are not understanding what the examiner exactly demanded to write in your answer paper sheet.

So always understand what is asked in exam questions before writing your answers . Most common verbs that are frequently used in exam questions are given below under the headings of verbs and definition.




Examiner's Verbs                                           Definition


*Define                          Give the meaning of something asked in question requirement . What is                                       meant by a word , concept , text etc ?


*Analyse                        It means an analysis of current situation , what happened , How 
                                     happened ( reasons ) , how to handle this situation ( possible solutions of
                                     the current situation )  and giving reasons for the current situation.
                                     Breaking situation into different parts to discuss , examine and interpret
                                     separately.


*Explain                        What is  meant by a word , concept , text etc ? Make something plain ,
                                     clear and understandable .

*Describe                      Give the key features , give a description of something asked in question ,
                                     giving details what is something like ?

*Apply                             To be relevant or  pertinent


*Assess                           It means evaluate , judge , estimate , appraise , analyse or determine                                             strength and weaknesses .


*Identify                           Make a list , Point out something , Recognize or select 


*Recommend                   Suggest that , something is good and deserves to be chosen .  To advise ,
                                       suggest a choice or a course of action .       


*Calculate                        Determine , compute , figure , quantify , something mathematically .
                                       Provide description along with numerical calculations.


*Construct the case        Make arguments in favour and against , supported by evidence.


*Criticise                        Do not explain the situation , present weaknesses / problems with the
                                    actions taken or view points expressed supported by evidence. To find faults
                                    or judge unfavorably.To judge or discuss the merits and faults of something.


*Evaluate                      Determine the value of something in the light of the arguments for and against
                                   or make an appraisal while comparing against a bench mark or set
                                   standards.

*Critically Evaluate        It means weighting the answer towards criticism /arguments against.


*Comment                     Discussion or opinion about something


*Conclusion                   The final result or statement about something . A judgement or decision
                                    reached by reasoning.


*Compare and                Explain the similarities and differences between two different concepts ,
contrast                        terms .        

*Distinguish                    Define two different terms , concepts on the basis of differences between
                                    them.

*Contrast                        Explain the differences between two different terms , concepts.


*Examine                       Inspect , study something thoroughly in order to determine their nature or
                                    condition.Critically review something in detail.


*Discuss                         Present arguments for and against something.


*Explore                         Examine or discuss in a wide - ranging manner.


Bottom Line : Mostly examiner,s high lighted  lack of understanding of the requirements of the question verbs as the most serious weakness in many candidate,s answers.All the examiner,s 
use these questions verbs very deliberately to signal what they require from candidates . So understanding these verbs is very important . That is why we provided explanation of all those
